Letting Summer Have Its Way

As you may know, we are knee-deep in moving and transition and change. (3 of my very favorite things. Heh.) We put our current house on the market last week, and thank heavens we are already under contract with a prospective buyer. “Thank heavens” because someone wants to buy our cute white house with black shutters, certainly, but I say it more because we can relax a little about keeping the house ship-shape. It’s awfully hard to make a house look like no one lives in it when 5 people very much do live in it.

Since a little construction is taking place at our future house, we won’t be moving in for a few more weeks. But you know what we have moved into? Adding drivers to the household! One of our 16 year old sons got his driver’s license. (How is this possible?) As he drove to the DMV yesterday with me in the passenger seat, I told him I would miss being his shotgun rider just as surely as he would miss all my expert analysis of his driving. He replied, “Of course, mom! Your wise instruction is beyond invaluable!”

Or maybe he said the exact opposite of that.

Anyway, let me just add that your offspring becoming a full-fledged driver is equal parts terrific and terrifying. While I’m thrilled to pass off the keys and drive a little less, it’s scary to send your baby on the road between countless other two ton vehicles. I learned to drive in a much smaller town with less people and lower speed limits. On the other hand, there were no cell phones or “find my iphone” apps to check in on me. My parents knew I was safe and sound when I pulled into the driveway safe and sound. (Now that I think about it, how in the WORLD did our parents and their parents do it? I have no idea.) So, at least we have modern technology to help us out.

Extra drivers in the house or not, it’s a full-to-the-brim summer. This next month will be tugging on my shirt like a toddler wanting attention, and I’m not going to fight it. So in the interest of letting summer have its way, I will take a little break from the blog here. I will most likely be back sometime in August, although I reserve the right to pop back in here sooner if I get a hankering to do so. By the same token, I reserve the right to pop back in later if life dictates it. As always, you can find me rather consistently right here.

In the meantime, I have a couple small offerings. First of all, I wrote a post for (in)courage this week entitled The Courage to Create from Who You Are. Caution: read it only if you like country music. (Just kidding! Please read it even if you don’t–I promise it’s not too twangy.)
