I’ve never warmed up to the term “Empty Nest” because to me, it sounds sad and…well.. empty.
Yeah, my youngest child, Faith, is graduating high school this spring, and this upcoming autumn will usher in a new parenting season for my husband and I commonly called the “Empty Nest years.” Yeah, this isn’t our first graduation rodeo as her twin brothers graduated high school four years ago. As was the case when the boys left home, I know Faith’s departure won’t mean only lament and lack–something “Empty Nest” kind of implies.
When my sons left for college, I rightly mourned their absence. Of course I did! I’ll never try to convince myself or you into skipping over the losses that come with growing kids. But with baby girl about to leave the nest, I’m both acknowledging the losses and reminding myself of all the good things this stage of life brings. And as a writer like me is wont to do, I processed a lot of that through sentences and paragraphs. In doing so, I compiled a twelve day downloadable devotional for the mom of the graduate called The Changing Nest. I wrote it for all of us mamas wanting reminders of hope during this big life change.
Why that title? As my friend Rachel said, just because our kids grow up and move out doesn’t mean our homes won’t still be a place of joy and familiarity for them and us. It doesn’t mean that we won’t still have an important role to play in their adult lives.
It doesn’t mean that we parents are suddenly relinquished to some kind of rocking chair in the corner, the best part of our lives now over.
My nest may be changing, but it sure isn’t empty. It’s full of different but very good things.

Yeah, we’ll still miss the full-time presence of those precious kiddos we’ve raised. But God wants us to know His goodness in the land of the living today as much as He did when our kids were still inside our homes, and I pray this book is one small way He reveals those good things coming to you!
From my changing nest to your own nest, whatever it may look like, I send you lots of love today!
