Five Minute Friday: Waking Up

in Faith· Fun Stuff· Uncategorized

I’m linking up to Lisa Jo’s (the Gypsy Mama) this morning. Every Friday, Lisa Jo picks a topic and encourages us to just write about it for five minutes, no editing words or thoughts.  I was a little surprised she did a link up this week, since she had a baby six days ago and all. Six. Days. Ago!  When my babies were less than a week old, I considered myself productive to have scratched out a grocery list let alone something more intelligible.

She’s just amazing like that.

So, if you’d like to visit LJ’s place and link up your own five minute post, click here. Even if you don’t want to link up, click over anyway cuz her pictures of little Zoe Grace are stinkin’ precious!

Anyhoo, today’s topic? Waking Up. So here it goes…

Start

Most days it is dark when I wake up, but I like it that way.

The house is very quiet, except for evidence that my man is getting ready for work. Combat boots on hardwood floors. Coffee pot grinding and brewing his morning goodness. Other than that, it’s still.

I started consistently getting up before the kids for my quiet time while David was deployed. I still do it because I’ve learned if I don’t start the day with God, I generally won’t end it with Him, either. Even though my kids are in school now and most days afford me a little free time, the daily distractions of life pound hard and snatch my time and good intentions.

So, I start the day with Him. Sometimes it’s read-a-long-passage and soak Him up for extended time. Sometimes it’s a one verse kind of morning. Either way, my day just goes better when I wake up with Him.

The Light in the dark.

Stop

Happy Friday to y’all and have a marvelous weekend!

Oh how true is this : “I started consistently getting up before the kids for my quiet time while David was deployed. I still do it because I’ve learned if I don’t start the day with God, I generally won’t end it with Him, either.”

Love this Kristen! Makes me look forward to tomorrow morning!

Visiting you via 5min Fridays. I love your logic about not ending with Him if you do not start with Him. That is the TRUTH!

HahI can barely write a grocery list even three weeks in, but somehow writing my thoughts helps me process them.
So many great images in this powerful piece! I wish I was more a morning person like this!

You ARE a morning person…a very, very early one with a newborn! Ha! Seriously, when my babes were very little, I was doing well to read the cooking instructions on a Lean Cuisine boxed dinner. You are doing fabulous, just fabulous!

The sun sets on a downright delightful month of ha The sun sets on a downright delightful month of having all the chicks back in the nest. We puzzled, Uno’d, and played a new game called Knope for President. (So fun!) We watched Mandalorian all together, and David and I started a Netflix show called Turn. We had tea (and coffee!) at 4:30 each afternoon like some kind of Brit wanna-be’s. I cooked like a crazy person because cooking is the most predictable Enneagram 2 thing I do. Pot roast, spaghetti, and baked casseroles, oh my! Plus, 21 year olds who’ve had a semester of fending for themselves on the food front are mighty appreciative when dinner magically comes out of the oven.

Said 21 year olds are back at college now, but I’m thankful for the good memories that stay with the rest of us Strongs after they’ve left. This last month held hard stuff for many of us, I know, but I hope it left you with some good memories as well. 💛
If your life looks anything like mine, difficult c If your life looks anything like mine, difficult change that started in 2020 didn't give one whit about the new year and walked right with you into 2021. Your change could be more broadly felt like fallout from a lingering pandemic, or it could be more individual —marital, parenting, job, or relational struggles that refuse to let go.

Or it could be both, one worsening the other.

If you’re weary from the loneliness that change can bring OR tired of resenting change altogether (and seeing it only through a lens of anxiety and frustration), consider giving #GirlMeetsChange and #BackRoadstoBelonging a look.

Our difficult change may not be going anywhere, but our outlook on it can.

With both books holding 200-ish reviews on Amazon and a 4.8 star rating, I still get the loveliest messages about how they’ve helped folks welcome a hopeful view of change and where they belong.

My daughter read that this past Christmas season, My daughter read that this past Christmas season, Christmas light sales were up 300% compared to years past. We may leave ours up for another week or two, and I’m 300% okay with that.

In the wise words of @iamtabithabrown, it’s my business.

It’s also my business how I choose to respond to something—indeed, it is a choice. Will I be thoughtful or defensive? Will I be someone who displays or douses the light of Christ?

In our work to love our neighbor as ourselves, may we be a people who persevere and refuse to stop using our own unique God-given light to dispel the dark. People are desperate for it, and this work matters.

Or, as Shania Twain would say, “Let’s go girls.” 🎶 👊🏻

Happy 7th day of Christmas, and Happy New Year, dear one!
