A Project, Military Spouses, and Housekeeping

in Military· Writing

Spring break is just around the corner here…and so is snow.

Thank you very much, Colorado.

{And Colorado answers, “Hey, we’re 7,000 feet up and it’s only March. So simmer down, Sweet Cheeks.”}

Also around the corner is the birth of a little project, and I need a bit of help with it. So I wondered if I might call upon my fellow military spouses (past and present) for a little assistance in answering the following questions?

1. When you think about your life as a military spouse, what are some words or short phrases that immediately come to mind?

2. What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of the military lifestyle?

3. During difficult seasons – deployment or otherwise – when the fears pressed in, how do you press on?

Feel free to answer any or all of the questions in the comments section *or* via email to kristen@chasingblueskies.net. Thank you in advance for any insight you are able to share. Let me hand you a steamy cup of coffee and some warm chocolate chip cookies for your trouble! {Unless you live where spring actually feels like spring rather than winter the sequel. Then I’d be happy to send you sweet tea with your cookies.}

I also wanted to mention a little housekeeping business:

If you have been reading Chasing Blue Skies via your Google Reader, my posts will be disappearing into the wild blue yonder as Google Reader is being phased out {or whatever the techie term is for going bye-bye}. If you are reading this blog and others via Google Reader, you may want to save your file and switch to something else. I’ve heard feedly is a great option because it integrates Google Reader so well. Otherwise, you’re always welcome to subscribe to our mailing list and receive free post updates via email. I only post two to three times per week, so I promise not to overwhelm your inbox!

Have a wonderful weekend, friends. I love you.

    Hey Kristen! I discovered your blog through Holley’s blog, you are an inspiration.

    I just wanted to give a couple of thoughts on your questions above. I think one of the most challenging parts of being a military wife is the time me and my husband spend apart. I never get used to it, and the pre-deployment/deployment/reunion/post-deployment cycle never becomes easy, either! It’s just tough stuff. One thing that has tremendously helped me when he is gone are the devotions “Faith Deployed” and “Faith Deployed Again”….no joke, these two books have spoken to my heart in the midst of many day to day challenges. Hearing the true stories of women’s lives, written in their own words, paired with scripture has been such an encouragement. Hope this helps!

      I *love* those two books and the hearts of the women behind them. Thanks for mentioning them here, and thank you for your worthy input!God bless and keep you, Janine.

    Kristen, Your questions are really good. I think the words to describe my life as a military spouse are: adventurous, need to be flexible, and fun, fun, fun!
    In our stage of life (hubby will be retiring in four years and children are grown and married) is being so far away from my children and grandchild. Believe or not, after 26 years, I still enjoy moving.
    When the children were little, my worst time was in Alaska, during the winter while my husband was deployed. The best solution to carrying on is to know you are not alone and talk to someone about your feelings. Knowing I had to take care of the girls was the only thing that got me out of bed some mornings.

    Hope these help with your project.

      It helps very much, Vicki. Thank you for your time and thoughtful words! I couldn’t help but nod my head in agreement to them.

      Have a wonderful Easter week, Vicki, and thank *you* for your service as well as your husband’s!

Instagram post 2196740842864252945_27499051 Do you have a favorite activity that adds to your or your family's daily rhythm during the Christmas and winter season?
.
For me, it’s lighting candles. I light candles simply because they add warmth and cheer. And during this time of Advent, the candlelight reminds me that Jesus, the Light of the world, came to light the way for each one of us to belong.

I’ve been thinking long and hard about how I can better reflect a hospitable spirit to those in my life. How do you practice everyday hospitality?
